The Otter


The otter is a mammal of the subfamily Lutrinae belonging to the order and the carnivore family Mustelidae. Lives in Europe, including Portugal, Asia, Africa, the southern portion of North America and throughout South America, including Brazil and Argentina. Its habitat is the coast or near rivers where the search food such as fish, crustaceans, reptiles, and less often birds and small mammals.

Usually the otter is nocturnal habits, sleeping during the day on the river and waking at night to seek food. Social groups are formed by females and their offspring, males do not live in groups and only joins a female during the breeding season. The gestation period of the otter is about 2 months and born after 1 to 5 puppies.

Otter adult measures 55 to 120 inches long (including tail) and weighs up to 35 pounds. Although their meat is not sold in large-scale otter is on the list of animals threatened with extinction mainly by the high value of its skin and the destruction of ecosystems to which the otter is adapted.

This animal has a coat with two layers, one external and one internal waterproof and used for thermal insulation. The body in turn is hydrodynamic, ready to swim at high speed.

Although it is a carnivorous animal and often wild, the otter is gentle and likes to play with people, and many times you can tame it.

The otter is able to whistle, hiss and squeal. You can stay underwater for 6 minutes and the swimming can reach a speed of 12 km / h.
